The Hotel Jerome, Spa Auberge; Snowmass, CO

In the midst of downtown Aspen, Colorado, sits the stately and impressive 1888 stone building, The Hotel Jerome. In the Gold Rush era, it was quite an elegant and upscale hotel. But, if the Jerome could talk, would it have wild tales to tell!

In the late 1880s, the Jerome was home to Wild West outlaws, Gold Rush miners, traders and early settlers. The Jerome was also host to more than a few unsavory characters and some of  questionable repute. The Jerome’s colorful and romantic history lends the Jerome an air of mystery, rumor and undeniable charm.

The Jerome has a classy, old elegance , so it is not surprising that the exclusive Auberge line of spas has taken residence there.  The Auberge Spa is well known it local such as Napa/Sonoma, .

The Auberge Spa suits the Jerome to a T. Weary and often overtaxed skiers, exhausted by their sport and acclimating to the altitude, or just looking to visit the trendy upscale spa, are rewarded with  sublime Auberge treatments. Signature treatents are delivered in classic Auberge style . Pampering and exquisite techniques prompt full relaxation and expert therapy. My appreciation of Auberge Spas is gauged by my unique methodology to measure all spas; the length of time it takes to fall asleep on the table. The Auberge Spa delivers! You must check it out when you visit Aspen!

Burj Al Arab Jumeirah – Dubai : The Most Luxurious Hotel in The World – Jumeirah

My “spa seeking” companion and I escaped Health Care City for our weekly jaunt in search of the perfect spa. This trip was in the city and close to my colleagues’ residence in the marina. After sharing a light brunch at the Standard we trekked over to the Burj.

Opulent is the best word to describe the self-titled “most luxurious hotel in the world.” From the street exposure to the bright intense and  colorful interior, the  over-the-top beautiful Burj was overwhelming. Styled in the blue and silver Dubai sail architectural motif, the relection off the silver gleams and glimmers, not only reflecting sun and water, but Dubai’s wealth and elegance.  And the interior of the hotel carries the theme to perfection. Oh, my …

Talise did not disappoint. From the first step into  The Burj Talise spa lobby, (uiyes, hotel sized lobby), and throughout most of the treatment rooms, it was one of the most awe-inspiring and expansive take-your-breath-away views. Instead of the usual dark, (though relaxing) spa experience, the light radiating from the glorious view bathed us in warm invigorating sunlight. It was ethereal, as close as I can imagine to a feeling of rebirth.  It was quite obvious this was not a typical spa find.

The treatments were out-of-this-world yet professional. The staff was responsive and eager to please. LaPrairie, an extavagant, (and expensive – but, heck, you only live once) was  the product used in the facial treatments. I didn’t splurge for the Caviar facial but my credit card felt like I did! The massage menu offered a variety of luscious treatments. Since the international time change, dryness of the climate and adjustment to working and living in a new culture left me a bit stressed, I tried the Ayurvedic Ahyanga massage (for the seriously overstressed) and it felt wonderful! When I was done , I felt like a new woman!

The only way to end the day was a lovely glass of champagne and my nice firm bed. If only I could find a place in the US to compare!

The Lime Spa at Desert Palm Dubai

An Avant Garde spa in the Dubai Desert. Oh, yeah!
Think of psychedelic mellow yellow, chartreuse green, peacock blue tiles. Massage beds that are King sized (bring a friend!). Sunning lounges that are ensconced in floor to ceiling convex windows;  windows that open to the sky!  The lounges are tiled in more of the orange, yellow, blue, and chartreuse color scheme and the lounges inclined to distribute just the right amount  of perfect sun and heat while allowing a viewing of the polo grounds where the show is on… Jockeys and polo ponies sprint about the grounds… palatial grounds.

The sauna room is like a small barn. (Okay, maybe a medium sized barn). Then, hot and steamy from the spa we enter the Ice room. It’s chilly but nothing to get excited about. I’ve never been in an actual Ice Room.  I hope I’m masking my disappointment.

Then, I look closer at the area. The Ice Room is similar to the sauna in size (big), but tiled in keeping with the color scheme: chartreuse, psychedelic yellow, green and blue. Of course, the room is cold but not chilled to the bone cold. Then… Out of nowhere, the room goes black and a whirring sound begins.  Flourescent disco lights pop on and do a little dance of their own, racing about and around the room as the ice mists forms and then shoots out an apparatus that slides out and looks like an overgrown snow cone machine. The machine then delivers the shaved ice ….. Wow! Oh, wow! Oh, Wow!

Once I catch my breath, its back out to the sun lounge where we sit on the inclined tile loungers, basking in the sun, eating Dubai dates and sipping warm tea. Oh, I forgot the best part… while reclining, eating the best dates in the world and sipping tea… the convex windows provide the perfect view of the polo practice… Man, oh man, This is the best dream I have ever had!
